Putting it ALL Together. Blockchain to NFTs to the Metaverse, mRNA and Web3

As we move into the 21st century, we're witnessing a technological revolution that's unlike anything we've seen before. From blockchain technology and Bitcoin to Ethereum, Web3, NFTs, the Metaverse, Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, nanoparticles, and vaccines, the pace of technological innovation is rapidly accelerating and all at the same time. According to Mark van Rijmenam, Founder of Datafloq and an AI, Blockchain, and Big Data strategist, "We are living in an era of accelerating change, where the pace of technological progress is exceeding our ability to keep up with it. This fourth industrial revolution is transforming everything from the way we work and communicate to the way we think and live our lives."

Blockchain technology, Bitcoin to Ethereum; Web3, NFTs, the Metaverse, Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality; nanoparticles, vaccines and RNA – these are all seemingly disparate concepts, yet they are all part of a larger movement known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

According to economist Klaus Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum, the Fourth Industrial Revolution is "a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres." In other words, the Fourth Industrial Revolution is characterized by the integration of the digital and physical worlds with biological systems, and it is changing our lives in ways we never thought possible.

One of the key technologies driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution is blockchain, which is the underlying technology behind cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Blockchain technology allows for secure, decentralized transactions, which is critical for enabling peer-to-peer interactions without the need for intermediaries. As Anthony Galima, a business anthropologist and technology expert, notes, "Blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with each other, from commerce to social interactions, and beyond." But blockchain technology is just one piece of the puzzle. The advent of Web3, or the decentralized web, is also a critical component of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Web3 enables secure, decentralized applications and services, which is essential for enabling the Internet of Things, smart cities, and other emerging technologies. As Galima notes, "Web3 is the backbone of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and it will be the foundation for which all future innovations are built upon or with in mind. All elements of commerce and movement will be tied into Web3 applications." Another key technology driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution is artificial intelligence, which is already being used in a wide range of applications, from natural language processing to image recognition. As Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, notes, "AI is the future of humanity, and it has the potential to change the world in ways we can't even imagine yet." Or perhaps we have imagined within the genre of science fiction, quickly becoming “science fact.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly developing technology that is changing the world we live in. AI refers to machines that can learn and make decisions based on data. AI is already being used in a wide range of applications, from healthcare to finance to education, and is poised to revolutionize many industries. In a remarkable moment for the technology industry, Dr. Geoffrey Hinton, an artificial intelligence pioneer, has quit his job at Google to speak out about the risks of AI. He believes that companies' aggressive campaign to create products based on generative artificial intelligence could be a risk to humanity. Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are also emerging technologies that are changing the way we experience the world. AR involves overlaying digital information onto the real world, while VR creates a completely immersive digital experience. These technologies are being used in gaming, education, and many other applications. Augmented and virtual reality play an important role in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, enabling immersive experiences that blur the lines between the digital and physical worlds. And NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are revolutionizing the way we think about ownership and authenticity in the digital age. At the same time, the rise of Web3, blockchain, and NFTs is creating new opportunities for creators and artists to monetize their work and build new business models. As Dr. Shermin Voshmgir, Director of the Research Institute for Cryptoeconomics at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, notes, "Web3 is a new paradigm for the internet that puts individuals back in control of their data and their digital lives. Blockchain and NFTs are the building blocks of this new internet, enabling new forms of ownership and value creation." Furthermore, with the advent of the Metaverse, we're seeing a convergence of these technologies, creating new possibilities for immersive and interactive experiences. As futurist Gerd Leonhard explains, "The Metaverse is the next stage of the internet, where the virtual and physical worlds merge. It will be a new economy, a new society, and a new civilization, with unprecedented opportunities and challenges." The Metaverse is a virtual world where people can interact with each other and digital objects in a shared virtual space. This concept has been popularized by games like Fortnite and Second Life, and is now being explored as a new frontier for social interaction and commerce.

But perhaps the most transformative technology of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is RNA, or ribonucleic acid. RNA plays a crucial role in the central dogma of molecular biology, which describes how genetic information flows from DNA to RNA to proteins. However, with the introduction of RNA-based vaccines such as the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, we're seeing RNA being used in unprecedented ways to modify our species.

As Dr. Eric Topol, a renowned cardiologist and digital medicine researcher, states, "The mRNA vaccines represent a breakthrough in science that will change medicine forever." This technology has already had a profound impact on our society, with Dr. Topol adding, "In the coming years, we'll see mRNA technology applied to other diseases, such as cancer and heart disease. We're only scratching the surface of what's possible with this technology." The key word over and over again when discussing mRNA is “technology.” It is a “technology” being introduced to the human species that has rendered participants into a "modified species." The 4th Industrial Revolution and age of transhumanism are characterized by a convergence of technologies, including blockchain, Web3, NFTs, AI, AR, VR, and RNA. As we continue to push the boundaries of what's possible with these technologies, it's essential that we take a thoughtful and intentional approach to ensure that they benefit all of humanity. As Dr. Topol puts it, "We're in a new era of medicine and science, but we must ensure that we don't lose sight of the human element in all of this." The Fourth Industrial Revolution is a truly transformative moment in human history, characterized by the integration of the digital, physical, and biological worlds. While these technologies are changing our lives in ways we never thought possible and/or are truly unaware of, it is up to us to ensure that they are used for the betterment of humanity, rather than for harm. As Galima notes, "It's up to us to shape the future, and to ensure that we create a world that is better, more equitable, more sustainable, more diverse, with greater measures of freedom for all."
